One week ago today, I went to your office with my very good friend Leigh. When we left your office – Leigh appeared to be the same. However, when we got out to her car, she told me she wanted to go somewhere for a cup of tea. I said that I’d love to (but I was wondering to myself that I never knew Leigh drank tea) and so I didn’t ask until we were sitting on the deck of this restaurant an hour or so later sipping on our second cup of tea. Cynicism notwithstanding, it’s hard to ignore a case such as “Jeff,” a 42-year-old lumberyard worker and father of three from Poultney. He estimates he was drinking 40-50 ounces of liquor a day in the two years surrounding his divorce. Beers after work gave way to drinks in the morning before work, more at his favorite bar at lunch, and ensuing detox and recovery programs as well as several near-death experiences.
At one point, Jeff says he was driving to work, loaded, and decided he needed help. A friend found him near the emergency room of Rutland Regional Medical Center, passed out in his truck. His blood alcohol level was a death-defying .37. Jeff calls chiropractors “garbage” and horoscopes “crazy”, but when his brother mentioned an article he had read about the Lenair Center, Jeff agreed to try it. He doesn’t reveal much about what happened when he first went in late February, and struggles to find words to describe Lenair. “I almost felt like there was something about her – her demeanor, her tone of voice,” says Jeff, who adds that she brought him to a state of “normalcy” – to his pre-drinking days. “It was a weird feeling when I left, like a peace.”
“I had known for a while that I had a problem with alcohol, but considered myself functional because I was a successful teacher, would never even consider drinking on the job, and had an adequate social life. It was when one of my students pointed out that I smelled like beer, which was from the night before and had relatively drank little, that I started researching.
I knew that traditional 12-step programs and rehab clinics would never work and the success rate of those weren’t even worth my effort. I read about The Lenair experience and the effectiveness and called, set up the dates, and got a friend to join me. During the sessions alcohol was initially addressed but health issues were then emphasized as far as things to watch out for and nutritional advice to implement. It has been over a month now and I still do not want a drink or even see myself drinking. This includes being at neighborhood pubs, on the beach, or relaxing after work. I do get bored, but do not see drinking as an option to alleviate this feeling.”

I came to you full of hope and skepticism. I considered myself a hopeless alcoholic. I have been through four 30-day inpatient programs followed by AA and I failed each time. I had given up. This thinking is inconsistent with reaction to the other treatment programs I have been through. When I graduated from the thirty-day programs, I participated in, I knew intellectually not to drink.
